If your kitchen is roughly the size of a walk-in closet, congratulations! You’re living the authentic 2026 urban experience. (She said with a tear in her eye.) The good news is that you don’t need a giant space to cook great Mexican food. A few compact, hardworking tools will make your life so much easier without demanding counter space.

These are the tools that earn their keep in my book:

1. A Comal That Fits Your Stove

A comal is non‑negotiable, but it doesn’t have to be the size of a satellite dish. A small cast‑iron or carbon‑steel comal heats tortillas, toasts chiles, and roasts tomatoes without hogging space. It stores vertically, heats evenly on a tiny burner, and can replace most pans. We love this cast iron option by the brand Victoria.

2. Immersion Blender

My immersion blender is the unsung hero of my kitchen. It handles salsas, adobos, and soups beautifully, and it saves you from hauling out a giant blender or washing a dozen parts. It is easier to clean, takes up almost no space, and earns its spot in my kitchen almost every single week. Personally, I'm a big believer in Vitamix. If you're looking for a powerful option, this is the one I'd go with.

3. Lime Press/Juicer

A lime press is an amazing tool! It pulls it's weight while still being compact and reasonably priced. This one is heavy-duty but folds flat, which saves even more space.

4. Small Tortilla Press (Yes, You Have Room)

This 8‑inch tortilla press is compact, easy to store, and will have you whipping out tortillas like a pro in no time.

5. Mesh Strainers

I use my mesh strainers more than you'd imagine. It's really crucial to own metal ones, which will allow you to strain hot liquids.  If you need a new set, we recommend this Cuisinart set. We've dealt with their warranty team before, and it just gave us more reasons to love their products!

Cooking Mexican food in a small kitchen isn’t about having less; it’s about choosing tools that actually pull their weight and work for you. A tiny kitchen doesn’t necessarily limit what you can cook. If anything, it makes you more intentional, more resourceful, and maybe, a better cook. Once you have the right tools, even the smallest space can feel like it’s working for you instead of against you.
